Welcome

Welcome to our updated website.  You may need to update any bookmarked pages as some names have changed.

The Isle of Man Family History Society was formed in January 1979 with the aim of encouraging the study of genealogy and family history, particularly within the Isle of Man. Being a member of the society benefits all those researching their families, whether they are Manx or not. The organisation is run by volunteers.

Meetings are held monthly, mostly on the third Friday and start at 7.30pm. We meet at the Union Mills Methodist Church Hall, where there is parking available. We invite speakers to entertain us with talks on historical or Manx topics.

Members of the society continue to transcribe and publish vital records for the benefit of all members. We have a display of this at the “Homecomer’s Marquee” on Tynwald Day each year, which provides an opportunity to welcome our visiting members and locals alike.

An active Facebook group has gained popularity – members of this do not have to be members of the Society. There are, however, advantages to joining.

Membership includes copies of our quarterly journal “Fraueyn as Banglaneyn” (Manx Gaelic) “Roots and Branches” which is published in February, May, August and November. It includes articles of genealogical and historical interest, “Members Interests” and “Can you help” sections.

We also have a dedicated members’ area on the website. An ongoing project, it contains transcripts to Wills, marriage contracts, burial records etc. Members will be issued with a username and password for access and it is usually published in the February journal, if you have not received it, please contact the Society Secretary Sarah Christian.

For people living in the Isle of Man whose ancestry is not Manx, our library holds the International Genealogical Index (IGI) on microfiche covering the British Isles. The library is located at the iMuseum, Kingswood Grove, Douglas IM2 3AS. Please see the library page for details.
