Definitions

“IOMFHS”  – The Isle of Man Family History Society and its digital presence – https://iomfhs.com and https://iomfhs.im

“Terms” – these Terms of Use (including privacy and data protection policies).

We are registered with the Isle of Man Information Commissioner.

 

Terms of Use (including privacy and data protection policies)

The Isle of Man Family History (IOMFHS) is based at The Research Centre, iMuseum, Kingswood Grove, Douglas, Isle of Man IM2 3AS.  

Anyone is entitled to use the Research Centre and resources section of the website, subject to these Terms, but users are required to be members of the society before accessing the member’s only section.  Details will be provided on joining. 

These Terms apply to all users.

These Terms are effective from 8 September 2024 and may be amended from time to time.

For what purposes is personal data collected?

The IOMFHS will collect and process your personal information for the following purposes:

  • To authenticate your access to the Member’s Area of the website;
  • To maintain a members’ list to enable us to post quarterly journals;
  • To notify members, via email or by the journal, details of any new content or updates to the website or society news;
  • To detect against error, fraud, or criminal activity, and enforce the Terms of Use.
  • The Trustees are legally obliged to keep a register of names and addresses of members which must be made available to any member of the Society (IOMFHS Constitution 5.3). For example, in case of the necessity of an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) which may be called at any time by the Society at the written request of at least 10 members or at the request of the Trustees (IOMFHS Constitution 6.9).  Generally, officers request permission before putting members in touch with other members;
  • If members would like to share their research interests in our quarterly journal, they must register their agreement on the application form or by email.  Our online register of members interests in anonymised.  Members can contact Officers to request access to particular journal entries.

 

When you visit IOMFHS websites, we will log search activity for each user and use this information retrospectively to detect misuse of accounts, for example, multiple logins and unusual volume of searches. 

Our servers (using log files or filtering systems) may collect information that your web browser sends any time you visit a website. This information may include but is not limited to your Internet Protocol address (IP address), browser type, operating system, language preference, any referring web page you were visiting before you came to our site, the date and time of each visitor request, information you search for on our resources, and other information collected by cookies or similar technologies.  If you do not accept cookies, however, you may not be able to use the website.

With whom do we share personal data?

Your personal data may shared with other parties if we are legally required to do so. We may access and disclose your personal data to any resource if we have a good-faith belief that doing so is required by a subpoena, by a judicial or administrative order, or is otherwise required by law. Additionally, we may disclose your personal information and other information as required by law or to exercise or defend legal rights; to take precautions against liability; to protect the rights, property, or safety of the resource of any individual or of the general public; to maintain and protect the security and integrity of our services or infrastructure; to protect ourselves and our services from fraudulent, abusive, or unlawful uses; to investigate and defend ourselves against third-party claims or allegations; or to assist government law enforcement agencies.
